Honour for tree project at family estate

Internationally- renowned conservationist David Bellamy has hailed the success of a 22-acre woodland project in North Yorkshire.

As part of his conservation awards scheme, Mr Bellamy has given a Special Distinction Award to the Hollicarrs Holiday Park on the Escrick Park Estate, between York and Selby, in recognition of its Three Hagges Jubilee Wood project.

Tree planting next to the holiday park has seen arable land transformed into ancient woodland for the benefit of the public.

The woodland was created in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the project has been aided by the input of the Forestry Commission and the Woodland Trust.

A charity, the Hagge Woods Trust, manages the site on Escrick Park, which has been owned and run by the Forbes Adam family for over 300 years.

By way of congratulations, Mr Bellamy, president of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association, which organises the awards scheme, said: “The Three Hagges Jubilee Wood is a huge ecological asset to the Hollicarrs Holiday Park, as well as a successful community project and a future educational resource.

“Let me congratulate everyone involved for their hard work and innovative thinking, which has been put in on behalf of the environment.”

Rosalind Forbes Adam, chair of the Hagge Woods Trust, who designed the woodland project with her son Beilby, said she was delighted and honoured by the recognition, adding: “I want to make sure that Three Hagges Wood is not only a beautiful place for Hollicarrs owners as well as the surrounding communities to visit but also supports a diverse range of wildlife, which is why every species of plant has been selected for its value to birds, small mammals, bees, butterflies and other wildlife.”
