Entrants are sought ahead of the contest which will take place at the Association’s industry summit - Beef Expo - which is coming to Yorkshire this year and will be held in York on Thursday, May 21.

The inaugural Future Beef Farmer Challenge 2015 is being run in partnership with EBLEX, the Charolais Cattle Society, XL Vets and Thompsons of York, as part of the beef industry’s showcase event at York Auction Mart.

Entrants can take part either as a team or as an individual. The team challenge is open to teams of two to four members, aged from 16 to 26. The open challenge sees individuals aged between 16 and 36 compete, and entries for this section will be excepted on the day of the Expo.

All will face four challenges which will test their knowledge of breeding and genetics, cattle health, nutrition and cattle selection for slaughter.

Chris Mallon, director of the National Beef Association, said: “Encouraging the next generation of progressive beef farmers is hugely important for the future sustainability of the industry and it’s something we at the NBA are very keen to support.”

David Benson, chief executive of The Charolais Society, added: “Technology and science are becoming more important to the beef industry, and a good knowledge of new developments in the sector will be vital in helping the next generation to move their farms forward.”

Teams can enter by calling EBLEX on 01904 771214.
