On the watch for badgers

BADGER families should be thriving this year, thanks to the wet weather giving them easy access to worms just in time for the weaning of cubs born this February, and the Forestry Commission has organised a series of badger-watching tours in one of its North Yorkshire forests over the summer.

The location will not be revealed until parties are assembled but the meeting point is near Pickering. Tours will be run at least once or twice a week between now and the end of August, led by Jane Payne, a dental hygienist in Scarborough who has been studying badgers for 25 years. The Forestry Commission is charging £12 a head for the tours – or £100 all-in for parties of up to 14. Children over 10 are welcome if accompanied.
