Platform for top pork products to shine at industry roadshow

The region’s independent butchers, farm shops and pork producers are being given the chance to showcase their products at an awards event in Harrogate next month.

Held by BPEX, the organisation for pig levy payers in England, the Regional Butchers Pork Product Awards roadshow stops at the Pavilions of Harrogate on January 29 with some of the industry’s most respected judges set to run the rule over sausages, pies and a range of other quality pork and pork meat products.

Gold, silver and bronze awards will be handed out and one winner will earn the title of Overall Champion for the North East of England.

Harrogate’s Gordon Atkinson and daughter Charlotte of Elite Meat Ltd took the main prize at last year’s event after topping the Black Pudding and Pork Offal Products category.

Keith Fisher, pork butchery and product development manager for BPEX, said: “The North East is our third stopping point on our tenth anniversary tour and promises to be a great event. Our judges are looking forward to sampling a selection of exceptional pork products from butchers and farm shops across the region.

“Plus as it’s our tenth anniversary we are offering every butcher the chance to enter one product free of charge, so if you’ve never entered before why not give it a go – you have nothing to lose.”

Judging is based on a product’s overall appearance, size, colour, ease of cutting, texture, structure, taste and smell.
