Price hike for parking in the Moors is approved

PARKING charges for both visitors and residents in the North York Moors will be increased for the first time in four years from March, after authority members approved a proposed price hike.

Short stay fees are set to go up from £2.20 to £2.50, long stay fees will rise from £4 to £4.50 and residents will pay £15 for annual parking permits instead of £10.

Members of the North York Moors National Park Authority made the decision at a meeting in Helmsley on Monday.

Richard Gunton, director of park services at the Authority, told The Yorkshire Post: “Members felt that the new level of charges was reasonable compared to those levied at other places, for example the Yorkshire Dales, and in view of the facilities that the Moors offers. Also, we are not introducing charges for using toilets like in other areas.”

Mr Gunton added: “We have held off increasing charges for the last four years in view of the difficult financial situation people have been facing. Now it’s the time where we catch up with growth in costs over the last five years.”

The Authority can expect an estimated 15 per cent increase in large car park income and 19 per cent more from permit sales as a result. Total gross income from parking in 2016/17 expected to be around £480,000.
