A PHOTOGRAPHER captured these unusual images of Mammatus clouds above storm-hit Yorkshire, creating bubble-like clouds across the sky.

The rare formation, formed on the base of a storm cloud, was spotted moments after a rainbow faded away.

Michiko Smith photographed the impressive scene above Normanton, West Yorkshire, at 6.30pm on Sunday.

He said: “Mammatus clouds appeared soon after the rainbow was gone and it lasted for a while. I heard thunder few times when the mammatus was in the sky.

“I was so excited to see the mammatus clouds since I have never seen it before.”

Mammatus appear as an upside-down cloud and are rounded and sack-like.

They are commonly associated with severe weather but they don’€™t cause severe weather themselves.

The spectacular bubbly clouds are rare because they can only be seen when they are low in the sky and lit up by sunlight.
