Exam success after school's demise

PREPARING for GCSEs can be a stressful time for any pupil.

But there was extra anxiety for one group of girls who found themselves without a school just weeks before their exams were set to start when Brantwood, in Sheffield, closed down after just nine days' notice.

The pupils were found places free of charge at other private schools in the city and now some of the students who went on to Sheffield High have celebrated success on GCSE results day. Former Brantwood student Antonia Hantusch, from Tickhill, is celebrating picking up 12 straight A* or A grades.

She achieved her five A*s in food technology, French, ICT, religious studies and science with seven grade As in English language, English literature, German, history, maths, music and additional science.

Brantwood head girl Olivia Smith secured four A*s in geography, physical education, science and additional science along with six A grades in art, English language, English literature, ICT, maths and religious studies. The 14 girls from Brantwood who continued their final ten weeks at Sheffield High with staff from their old school all achieved five or more A* to C grades with more than a third of exam entries receiving either an A* or A.

Not only did the majority of the girls gain between seven and 11 GCSE's each but between them they achieved 54 marks at either A* or A. Former Brantwood pupil Nikitta Barnett, 16, said: "The High School has been very supportive."
