Firefighters were called out to a false report of an explosion and fire at an electricity sub station in Harrogate.

Two North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews from Harrogate responded to the call on Hartwith Way today after a cable fault in an overhead power network at around 12.30pm.

This caused a 'large bang, sparks and oil to escape' although no injuries were caused according to electricity provider Northern Powergrid.

A spokesperson for the company said: “No one's power was interrupted as a result of the fault and our engineers attended and will carry out an investigation into the cause of the fault. We'd like to reassure customers that incidents of this nature are rare and not a common occurrence."
