fa hand down £5,000 penalty

Sheffield Wednesday have been fined £5,000 by the Football Association after the ugly scenes which marred last week’s home defeat to Bristol City, writes Richard Hercock.

Losing 3-2, the Owls thought they should have had a penalty when City defender Richard Foster appeared to hand Rodri’s goal-bound shot, then Gary Madine’s follow-up ‘goal’ was ruled out by referee Andre Marriner.

The official accused Owls defender Miguel Llera of manhandling him in the protests which followed the penalty claims, as Wednesday players surrounded him.

Llera was booked and a free-kick awarded to City.

The Owls accepted an FA charge of failing to control their players.

Owls boss Dave Jones said: “I did think there was mitigating circumstances. Miguel is adamant he didn’t push the referee, the report says he didn’t push him. But we can’t do anything about it now.”
