Fatboy Slim welcomes baby and sobriety

Reformed drinker Norman Cook says he and wife Zoe Ball's new child was "a present of our sobriety".

The DJ-producer, 46, became a father for the second time when radio presenter Ball gave birth to daughter Nelly last month. They already have a son, nine-year-old Woody.

Today Cook said he was enjoying fatherhood, claiming it is "easier" with girls.

The DJ, who also works under the name Fatboy Slim, said Nelly felt like a gift following his stint in rehab for drinking last March.

"Zoe and I both gave up drinking so this baby is a present of our sobriety. It was a tough start to the year but we're both much happier. It's all settled in at the Cooks' household," he said.

Cook said: "It's a bit scary the first time, but this time round, our lives are a lot more comfortable – there's a confidence and a comfort in it and it helps that she's a girl," he said.

"Girls are much easier than boys, well, so far. It's only been a month. She's fairly quiet at the moment, shall we say?"

Cook said he and Ball, who have been married for 10 years, had doubts about their parenting abilities initially .

"We weren't quite sure if we were ready to be parents, and I think we weren't sure even after a few years."

Cook has been sharing duties with his wife, who will be returning to work at Radio 2 this week.

"It takes both of us to do it. We're a good tag team. It's been great."
