Final homecoming for five soldiers

The bodies of five British soldiers killed in Afghanistan returned home yesterday.

Lance Sergeant David Greenhalgh, Lance Corporal Darren Hicks, Kingsman Sean Dawson, Rifleman Mark Marshall and Sapper Guy Mellors were honoured in the Wiltshire town of Wootton Bassett by their families, friends and local people.

The five hearses crept into the rain-soaked town and halted briefly beside the war memorial as mourners placed flowers on the cars.

Earlier, the men arrived at nearby RAF Lyneham by C-17 transport plane. Their Union flag-draped coffins were met by their families.

A total of 261 British service personnel have now died since the start of operations in Afghanistan in 2001.
