The lucky moggy was saved by crew members from Castleford’s white watch.

They had been called to a house fire at about 3.30pm yesterday on Churchbalk Drive, Pontefract.

A fire service spokesman took up the story: “We were called to this incident because the crew from Pontefract were out on another job. As we were travelling to it, we were told there was a woman trapped in an upstairs bedroom, however, when we arrived she was already out.

“The bedroom was on fire and we went in and pulled out a cat which was not moving. Using oxygen and massaging its heart, after about 15 or 20 minutes it came round.

“We have done this sort of thing before. Cats are quite resilient. The animal struggled to stand at first and was then taken to the vets. They say they have nine lives, well it used one up that day.”

The woman, in her 40s, was taken to Pinderfields Hospital to be treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
