Firefighters tackle barn fire

Thousands of tons of straw went up in flames this morning in a barn fire in North Yorkshire.

The incident happened on Salmon Lane, Snape, near Bedale, shortly before 5am but was still ablaze at 8am.

Fire crews said approximately 4,500 bales of hay and 1,000 tons of silage were involved in the fire, although initial concerns were that there was also some livestock in the 100m by 60m barn.

Eight fire engines were involved in tackling the fire, the cause of which is unknown.
