Firefighters tackle flooding at homes and businesses in York and Selby

Firefighters in North Yorkshire came to the aid of residents and businesses who found their properties flooded after heavy rain.

Crews from Selby were called to three properties in the town at around 4.50pm yesterday after they were flooded by surface water.

Around an hour later, York crews helped a business in Stonegate when problems with the drainage resulted in flood water pouring inside.

A fire service spokesman said: "The drainage system on the roof had become blocked so the crews cleared the blockage and isolated the electrics."

Within minutes of that call, crews from Acomb and Tadcaster were dispatched to the Nunthorpe Road area of York where they pumped out several flooded homes.
