Firm fined after worker injured

A VEHICLE recovery firm has been fined £5,000 after a seven-tonne lorry fell from a jack, trapping a 22-year-old underneath and fracturing two vertebrae in his back.

The mechanic was working at ABR Rescue Ltd’s workshop in Grindell Street, Hull, in June 2012, fitting a brake chamber to the vehicle, when a workmate, who was in the lorry’s cab, started the engine.

The vehicle came off, injuring the 22-year-old who was off work for three months as a result.

ABR Rescue Ltd was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £3,760 by Hull Magistrates yesterday after admitting breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

The Health and Safety Executive, which investigated, said precautions should have been taken including supporting the truck with axle stands.
