Firm fined over oil pollution of beck

A TRANSPORT company from Scunthorpe has been ordered to pay almost £30,000 after admitting four charges relating to the polluting of a beck and the uncontrolled storage of oil.

Westram Limited, of Raventhorpe Lodge, Brigg Road, was prosecuted by the Environment Agency after a man walking his dog along Bottesford Beck on January 13, 2011, noticed a strong smell of diesel.

The next day he and another member of the public also noticed an oil slick.

An investigation found oil discharged from a tank on the site had entered a tributary of the beck via a surface water drainage pipe, and that oil in the beck had travelled two-and-a-half miles downstream.

The company was fined £23,000 and ordered to pay £5,300 in costs.
