The pair were fishing near Aldbrough when the boat's anchor became fouled. The stern was pulled under the water and the craft then began to sink.

A nearby fishing vessel rescued the two men on board from the sea as a boat from volunteer organisation Hornsea Inshore Rescue arrived at the scene.

The casualties were unhurt and after they were returned to Hornsea, rescuers Karl Shannon, Steve Hall, Faye Melody and Craig Beadle set out again to salvage the capsized vessel, which had only its bows visible above the surface.

Leading coxswain Karl Shannon decided the best option was to attach a tow line whilst the stricken vessel still retained an element of buoyancy. After a very difficult tow the crew eventually returned the boat to Hornsea slipway where she was drained of water and eventually recovered back to her berth at Hornsea Boat Launch.

Leading coxswain Karl said: “It was touch and go to save the vessel but the Atlantic 75 Spirit of Hornsea is a very capable and versatile craft which is well equipped for this sort of eventuality, as are the crew."

Hornsea Inshore Rescue are appealing for both donations and new volunteers, who will receive full training. The organisation is based at the Burton Road boathouse in Hornsea.
