Five local teenagers have been arrested in connection with the incident – three girls aged 13, 14 and 15, and two boys aged 14, North Yorkshire Police said. They have all been released on police bail to allow for further enquiries.

Officers are appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and noticed anything suspicious, to get in touch.

Firefighters from Bedale and Northallerton initially responded to the fire, but were later joined by appliances from Masham, Northallerton, Richmond, Colburn, Stokesley, Ripon and Harrogate, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

A water bowser from Boroughbridge was also mobilised.

By midnight, the incident was scaled down to three crews and the fire was allowed to burn out under supervision.
