Flooded homes could get tax break

FLOOD victims in the Yorkshire Dales are set to be able to claim council tax discounts under a new scheme.

The Richmondshire district has been badly hit by flooding in the last 12 months, prompting the plans to offer the discounts. Richmondshire District Council is one of only a handful of authorities nationally set to create its own policy which could see a tax-free period for up to 12 months for properties affected by floods.

“It is the first time this type of discount has been agreed by the authority – but it recognises the hardship many residents have experienced over the last 12 months during the severe weather conditions,” said the council’s deputy leader Mick Griffiths. “It will be piloted for 12 months and then reconsidered by members.”

Changes to an existing national exemption scheme mean flooded homes may only be entitled to claim a 100 per cent discount for one month. But under the Richmondshire scheme, eligible homeowners would be able to claim a 100 per cent discount for up to 12 months.

The Strategy Board has backed the plans and the decision is expected to be ratified at a full council meeting next month.
