Football hero makes pitch for life saving service

FIREFIGHTERS who are leading a drive to remind people to test their smoke alarms have recruited Sheffield United captain Michael Doyle to help them achieve their goal.

The Blades midfielder yesterday urged fans to sign up to Press The Button, a reminder service launched by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to help cut house fire deaths.

The brigade said firefighters have been to dozens of house fires in the last three years where the alarm battery was missing or flat and said their internet-based reminder would help stop that happening.

Doyle said: “I’ve got a great deal of respect for the work the fire service do, and I hope this new service will help people stay safe from house fires. I’d urge all our supporters to sign up for free reminders.”
