Fuel thief had 1,000-gallon tanks installed

A THIEF who converted two vehicles to carry large amounts of stolen fuel has been jailed for eight months.

Ryan John-Lewis, 28, of Buttershaw, Bradford pleaded guilty to two counts of making off without payment when he appeared at Bradford Crown Court this week.

It took a six-month investigation by the Vehicle Crime Team at Keighley to catch John-Lewis.

Detectives discovered that he had fitted large containers, capable of carrying around 1,000 gallons in fuel, into a Ford Transit and a Ford Focus.

John-Lewis travelled from one petrol station to another, filling up vehicles with £130 of fuel, the most that can be taken.

Officers are warning other drivers to fit anti-theft number plate screws as this deters thieves who use false plates to carry out crimes.

The public are also urged to report anyone they suspect of stealing fuel.
