Gladys Kell, magistrate

Gladys Kell, who has died at 92, was a magistrate in the Spen Valley whose tough line on sentencing earned her the record for sending more offenders to jail in a single day than anyone else in the country.

She was also a Spenborough councillor for 11 years and a deputy mayor, standing out at public events by virtue of a hat collection that rivalled those at Ascot.

She was also a fundraiser for Kirkwood Hospice, for which spent a day in jail on bread and water.

Her regular life, however, was more colourful, She flew on Concorde and travelled many times on the Orient Express railway carriage.

She and her late husband, Cyril, whom she met while out dancing at Cleckheaton Town Hall, had two daughters, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a great great-grandson.
