Gold and art collection fetches over £80,000

A COLLECTION of gold coins, jewellery and art found at a hoarder’s house in Leeds has fetched over £80,000 at auction.

The items were found at a large Victorian house in Harehills which belonged to a recently deceased Indian lady.

Leeds auctioneer Gary Don, who estimated it might fetch £50,000, was delighted with the success of yesterday’s sale of around 200 lots.

One screenprint, entitled ‘Fragment Number 2’ (1965) by Bridget Riley fetched £23,000. Mr Don said the Riley work had been purchased in the 1980s for £50.

Mr Don said: “We had telephone bidders from all over the world and we had representatives of galleries in London. We are absolutely delighted with how the sale went.”

Also sold was a diary from 1772-73, believed to have been written by a Yorkshire textile trader. It was found in a builder’s yard in Chapel Allerton, Leeds but the author is unknown. It sold for around £800 to a private buyer from Yorkshire.
