Grand Départ trophy is unveiled in Yorkshire

IT is one of the most coveted trophies in world sport and yesterday, the official Grand Départ Trophy for the Tour de France arrived in Leeds as the start of the much-anticipated cycle road race approaches.

Leeds City Council leader Coun Keith Wakefield joined council chief executive Tom Riordan and Welcome to Yorkshire’s Gary Verity for the unveiling, before the event begins in Leeds on July 5.

The trophy, presented by Tour de France organisers Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) to the hosts of the Grand Départ of the race each year, is now on display outside the council chamber in Leeds Civic Hall.

At the conclusion of last year’s race, the trophy was officially passed over on the finish line on the Champs-Élysées by President of the Executive Council of Corsica Paul Giacobbi to Mr Verity, who led the bid to bring the Tour de France to Yorkshire.

Mr Verity said: “This is a great chance for everyone to see the trophy up close and personal. It’s wonderful to see Yorkshire inscribed on this impressive trophy and our county associated with the Tour.

“It also brings home the fact for many that the Tour de France really is coming and we are just months away from a historic moment for Yorkshire.”
