Harry Gration and the Mayor send off Bradford’s first wedding couple

A couple made history when they became the first to tie the knot at Bradford City Hall’s new register office.

Sarah Dillon, a community nurse, and Sean Ward, who works for a wholesale food co-operative, got married after the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Coun Mike Gibbons, and Look North presenter Harry Gration officially opened the office yesterday.

The couple, from Denholme, who are both 29 and were born and raised in the city, joined guests for their wedding breakfast in City Hall’s banqueting hall where Bradford Council’s catering manager Brian Laverick, has provided for many dignitaries over the years, including the Queen.

Bradford Council Leader Coun David Green wished the couple all the best for their future.

Coun Green said: “We’re very proud of the new register office on City Hall’s ground floor. City Hall is much admired by visitors from all over the country and provides a beautiful heritage setting for weddings. City Park also provides a fabulous backdrop for photos.”

The couple also had pictures taken on the landmark’s grand staircase which was officially opened 100 years ago.
