Here's why this RAF base in Yorkshire could be the new home of the Red Arrows

With the announcement that the RAF is to close and sell the Red Arrows' base at Scampton in Lincolnshire, fans of the display team are wondering where the squadron will move to.

Military expert and journalist Gabriele Molinelli speculated on Twitter that RAF Leeming near Northallerton could become the team's new home.

Ministry of Defence to close RAF Linton in North YorkshireHe cited the fact that Hawk aircraft - the same as those used by the acrobatic pilots - are already based at Leeming as part of 100 Squadron, who are the only occupants of the facility.

The station is surrounded by plenty of airspace and is currently used for air combat training.

The Red Arrows have visited the base in the past for training.

As well as Scampton, the RAF is to shut RAF Linton-on-Ouse, near York, and transfer its basic jet fighter training function to RAF Valley in Wales by 2020.
