Despite turning 81 in December Mr Slater has no plans to slow down. In fact his doctor has told him that the fresh air and exercise is good for his health.

Mr Slater says: “The best thing about working here is meeting people. I love talking to customers and getting to know the familiar faces who visit the store. I’ve got no plans to retire as of yet – my job keeps me fit!”

Store manager Ray Nicholls said: “Our customers love stopping to have a chat with Gerry and he’s always so helpful.”

Anne Hodkin, the company’s community life champion, said: “Gerry is so friendly and everybody loves him – especially the elderly customers who visit the store every Tuesday.

“He’s always there to greet them and help them off the bus.”
