Hospital open again after bacteria find

A SEASIDE hospital forced to close by the discovery of legionella bacterium will re-open today.

Withernsea Community Hospital was closed on December 21 after the discovery of the bacteria in its water system, although health chiefs were quick to point out that this was not the strain that causes Legionnaire’s disease.

The minor injuries unit, out-patient clinics and dental centre all open again today, while the 12-bed ward will open tomorrow.

A health service spokeswoman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience the closure has caused but are pleased that this situation is now resolved and that Withernsea Community Hospital can re-open.

“We are grateful for the support from staff, patient organisations and colleagues at the local medical practice who have made considerable efforts to ensure that services for patients continued to be provided.”
