Hospital slaps Chubby Brown with parking ticket as he hands over £5,000 cheque

The blue comic had just presented a giant cheque to staff at the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, when he returned to his car and found a £50 ticket plastered on the windscreen.

That was despite Brown, whose real name is Royston Vasey, having permission from hospital bosses to park there.

The ticket had been written out in error by the private company which operates the car parks and has now been rescinded.

A South Tees Hospital Trust spokesman said: “Mr Vasey had permission to park where he did for the duration of the cheque presentation.

“We have apologised to Mr Vasey for the oversight, which he found highly amusing, and we are very grateful to him for the very generous donation he made.

“The ticket was issued in error and has been rescinded.”

Brown, who lives near Northallerton, North Yorkshire, received treatment at the hospital when he was battling throat cancer 10 years ago.

On his Facebook page, the comedian proudly displayed a photo of the cheque presentation to hospital staff.

He wrote: “It goes without saying these professional skilled and dedicated doctors have (given) me an extra 10 years with my lovely wife and children, thank you never seems enough.

“So I help to raise money for the cause, to rid the world of this rotten disease called cancer!

“The love and aftercare got me through the bad times, (Nurses are born angels) and as you know that’s priceless!”

Consultant oncologist Dr Clive Peedell tweeted: “Big thanks to Roy Chubby Brown for donating £5,000 to our cancer centre. Apologies for parking ticket, Roy!”

Brown raised the cash through merchandise sales, and it will go towards hospital’s Endeavour Unit, for use by patients, their families and staff.
