The man, who is thought to be in his 80s, was taken by ambulance to Hull Royal Infirmary where he was said to be in a serious but stable condition yesterday.

A 17-year-old youth was arrested outside a Primark store in Carr Lane, in the city centre, on Saturday, an area that remained cordoned off and under police guard for several hours following the arrest.

A police presence was also being maintained outside the property in the east of the city yesterday. The teenager was taken into custody and questioned by detectives before being charged yesterday afternoon. He is due to appear before magistrates in the city this morning.

Humberside Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and added that the youth was known to the couple.

The family of the woman, who has not been named, are being supported by specially trained officers, police said.
