Innovative ‘fat vat’ scheme expanding

A scheme helping to turn fat into fuel while preventing blocked pipes is being expanded after a successful trial in Bradford.

Yorkshire Water began the unique “fat vat” project in the Bradford Moor area in March, asking residents to collect used cooking oil in containers rather than pouring it down the drain.

More than 500 litres of used cooking oil have been collected. The liquid, which is converted into a bio-fuel, could provide enough power to make 125,000 cups of tea.

As well as generating renewable energy, the project also prevents blockages in the sewer and since the trial was launched, there has not been a single blockage on either of the streets involved.

Yorkshire Water is looking to expand the project to another 50 houses on nearby Byron Street.
