Mrs Cunliffe-Lister said: “I am very pleased to have been asked by Her Majesty to present Doreen Engall with her MBE.

“She is truly exceptional and inspirational in every way and I am delighted that her work and achievements have been recognised.”

Coun Engall, who won her first council election in 1973, said: “I feel deeply honoured to receive the award and I am still finding it difficult to grasp.

“In many of my achievements I have been helped by others and I look on this as a local honour in recognition of their help.”
