A fisherman himself, he was one of the founder tutors at the port’s fishing school, teaching net making and pot making, and advising students on their sea duty training.
The school called him “invaluable”, and closed for his funeral, as a mark of respect.
Born and raised in Whitby, he was son of Jack and Alice Hebden. He went to Mount and West Cliff schools before beginning his career with his father on MFV Whitby Rose.
He later worked for years on the MFV Ocean Venture.
He leaves Mary, his wife of 49 years, from whom he was rarely apart, and sons, Richard and Simon.
