Leeds primary school evacuated over '˜suspicious phone call'

Children and teachers from the Beeston Primary School, in Town Street, were rushed from the scene and taken to nearby Hugh Gaitskell Primary School where parents were asked to collect them.

Nick Edensor, headteacher at Beeston Primary School, has confirmed that the evacuation was caused by a “suspicious phone call to the school”.

He said: “I would like to praise the staff for the calm and highly organised way they followed our evacuation procedure and our pupils for being so sensible and well behaved.

“I would also like to thank the leadership at Hugh Gaitskell School for accommodating us at short notice.

“We will continue to work with the police to ensure the school and our pupils remain safe.”

West Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called at about 10.44am today about a hoax call made to Beeston Primary School. The school was searched and nothing was found. Enquiries remain ongoing.” The incident comes amid series of bomb hoaxes across the country, which prompted school evacuations in areas such as Brighton, Swansea, Cardiff and Ipswich today.
