Less dough as bread cost rises

Britons are spending more and more dough on bread, with the average price of a standard loaf shooting up 7p to £1.22 since the summer.

The average retail price of an 800g loaf, taking in the cost of Warburtons, Hovis and Kingsmill, as well as own brands, has soared since July as bakers pass on severe increases in wheat costs, the Grocer magazine reported this week.

Kingsmill increased its prices the most, with the price of its Everyday White Loaf up 18 per cent since July and now costing £1.36.

The magazine reported that a drought in the US caused the milling wheat price to leap by 40 per cent, to £246 a tonne, in late July and early August.
