Life-size leviathan of deep set to make big impression

A NEW art exhibition which aims to explore the relationship between human beings and nature opens at a Sheffield gallery with exhibits including a life-size picture of a whale.

The event, called Origin010, is being hosted at Sheffield Hallam University and brings together drawing, painting, text and animation at the Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery in Hallam University's Furnival Building.

A spokesman from Sheffield Hallam University said: "The exhibition aims to address our complex relationship with nature and to explore the question of what it means to be alive. Works on show include Cell, a series of imagistic haiku poems by Sheffield Hallam's creative writing lecturer Chris Jones and a massive, life-sized pencil drawing of a narwhal by artist Paul Evans."

The exhibition also features Chaos and Theory, an animation of vividly patterned butterflies created in collaboration with Sheffield-based creative agency Humanstudio.

Mr Evans recently saw his massive drawing Leviathan, a life-sized drawing of a sperm whale, selected for Art Bin, a project based at The South London Gallery. Mr Jones has exhibited his work at Sheffield's Millennium Galleries.

The free exhibition runs until Sunday, September 12 and the gallery is open between 10am and 5pm Monday to Sunday with extended hours until 8pm on Wednesday.

Mr Jones and Mr Evans will also host an In Conversation event at the gallery on Thursday, September 9, starting at 7.30pm.
