Lifeboat crew saves lone yachtsman

A LONE sailor had to be rescued by Bridlington Lifeboat after becoming becalmed in a busy shipping lane early on Tuesday.

The traditional wooden yacht Leona called for assistance after the wind dropped as she was making her way from Hull to Scarborough.

Lifeboat volunteers from Bridlington RNLI lifeboat station went to the scene three miles south-east of Flamborough Head.

Crewman Andy Webber boarded the yacht to assist in rigging a tow. As well has having no auxiliary engine, the yacht had no flares and the radio seemed to be only intermittently working.

Coxswain Stuart Mckie said: "The yacht had no power at all and was in the shipping lanes for the area so we needed to get him away from there."

The inshore lifeboat was called out that afternoon to bring a six-year-old boy who was out of his depth back to shore, and again later that evening to an abandoned dinghy.
