Longest serving tenant moves out

THE longest recorded serving council tenant in the East Riding has moved out of the house that had been her home since the start of the Second World War.

Nell Anderson, who is now aged 102, moved in to the house in Kent Road, Goole, in May 1939 along with her late husband, Ernest, and five-month-old son, Michael.

She has moved to a nursing home, and her son admitted his mother had been upset but realised she needed more care.

He added: “It was a stable home for our family for 74 years and we never knew anything else. It had many happy memories.”

The three-bedroom house was built following slum clearances in Old Goole. Mr and Mrs Anderson moved in just before the start of the war, and their first rent was six shillings and two pence. In the years that followed they had a daughter, Anne. The couple were offered the chance to buy the house in the 1960s for £1,000, but Mr Anderson, who worked at Ferrybridge power station, refused to have a mortgage. The property was remodelled in 1983 and got double glazing for the first time. Mrs Anderson’s husband died in 1986 and while she was offered a smaller flat, she opted to stay in the house.
