Man charged over Sheffield Christmas Day robbery where victim later died

A 40-year-old man has been charged with robbery following a Christmas Day attack in Sheffield where the victim later died.

Father-of-four Stephen Starkey, 61, was assaulted during the robbery at his home in Reney Crescent, Lowedges on December 25.

Wayne Muirhead, of Batemoor Road, Sheffield, was due to appear before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court today, Friday January 2, charged with robbery.

South Yorkshire Police were called to reports of a robbery at Mr Starkey’s home at around 10.30am on Christmas Day. Cash and a PlayStation 3 were stolen.

Retired caretaker Mr Starkey, who was disabled after almost losing a leg in a motorbike accident, was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries, but later died.

A post-mortem examination proved inconclusive and further tests are to be carried out.

South Yorkshire Police have renewed appeals for anyone with information about the robbery to get in touch.
