Market carousel target for restoration project

Generations of children have ridden the roundabout at Barnsley Markets.

But the carousel has been out of action for several months.

Now, Barnsley Museums is working with the owners of the roundabout to try and restore the piece so it can be used by children once again.

Experience Barnsley, the new social history museum set to open next year at Barnsley Town Hall, is set to use cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund to repair parts of the carousel.

A spokesman for Barnsley Council said: “ Favourite pieces will be installed in pride of place in the new museum for children to play on and for people to share wonderful memories about.

“The other parts of the roundabout will be taken into special storage, so it can hopefully be restored in the future.”

Dr John Tanner, from Barnsley Museums, said: “We are really pleased and proud that we will be looking after the roundabout, such a treasured piece of Barnsley’s heritage.”

Current roundabout owner Stewart Robinson said the carousel had been in his family for 52 years.

He said: “Everyone loves it and we’re really pleased it will be looked after long into the future. We’re now looking for other ways in which our family can continue to entertain future generations visiting the town.”
