Mayor opens new council houses

THE latest batch of new council houses, which are the first to be built in Rotherham for decades, were unveiled by the town’s mayor yesterday.

Coun Shaun Wright officially opened the 29 homes on a development at Albert Road, West Melton, and said he was “delighted” to see some already let.

Builders have already handed over 17 houses to Rotherham Council and the remaining 12 apartments were transferred to the authority yesterday.

The West Melton project is the fifth of seven with developments in Maltby, Thrybergh and Kilnhurst now occupied by tenants.

A total of 132 homes are to be built by the end of the year, after the council received £8.7m from the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency.

Two more projects at Canklow and Brinsworth are now under way and council tenants have been invited to put their names forward for the new houses.

After touring the project yesterday, Coun Wright said: “This is Rotherham’s fifth council house development. We have built nearly 100 new high-specification housing units with more to come, which can only be good for our tenants.”
