More taking healthy school meals

DIETICIANS who helped design nutritious menus for schoolchildren have unveiled figures which show their lunches are becoming more popular with youngsters.

The proportion of children eating school dinners in Doncaster is among the highest in the country, with almost 61 per cent of pupils taking them in primary schools.

Health workers said this compared with a national average of just 41 per cent, and added that school dinners were the key to "safeguarding the health of children today and in the future".

New menus were drawn up by NHS Doncaster, alongside Doncaster Council's school catering service, which provides meals to 102 primary schools and half of the town's secondary schools.

Paul Burns, senior health improvement manager at NHS Doncaster, said: "A healthy, balanced diet promotes proper growth and development and helps to protect health in the long term."
