Mother blasts death sentence threat

The mother of a Yorkshire man who died along with his new wife in a quad biking accident on their honeymoon in the Maldives is worried a man charged in connection with the incident faced a possible death sentence.

Newlyweds Jonathan and Emma Gray, from Halifax, West Yorkshire, were killed when the machine crashed into a tree just a few days into their honeymoon in August last year.

Mr Gray’s mother Cath Davies said she had been told by police quad bike driver Filip Petre, 23, faced a maximum penalty of death or a 25-year prison sentence.

Mrs Davies said she still viewed the incident as a “tragic accident” and not “a result of wilful or malicious intention”.

She told BBC Look North: “It’s barbaric.

‘‘It’s not something that any of us would ever condone or want to happen.”
