M&S regional head Graeme Pallant said: "We have consulted with our employee representatives, listening carefully to their views and suggestions, as well as those of the local community.
"Unfortunately, none of the proposed alternatives we received would have made the store commercially viable and therefore, it was necessary for us to make this difficult decision."
The company is to continue consultations before the closure expected in January.
