Museum brings together Mallard siblings

Dominion of Canada, the sister engine of Mallard, the world’s fastest locomotive, has gone on display in the Great Hall of the National Railway Museum.

The locomotive has been repatriated from Montreal and since December has undergone a transformation and has been painted in glorious garter blue. The stage is now set for the museum’s Great Gathering, the 75th anniversary celebrations of Mallard breaking the world steam speed record. Along with fellow traveller, Dwight D Eisenhower, the repatriated locomotive arrived in the UK last October. On July 3, Mallard and its five surviving sister A4 locomotives, will fulfil the dreams of rail fans, including Museum volunteer Robin Gray, pictured, when they will be together around the turntable in the for two weeks – a sight never seen before.PICTURE: Gary Longbottom.
