A number of searches of the area have been ongoing by police officers, firefighters and NPAS at the scene today.

Detective Inspector Tim Hunt of Wakefield District CID, said: “Both the police and partner agencies have been conducting widespread searches on that stretch of the canal and surrounding area this morning, since reports were received of a man being seen on the wrong side of the barrier.

“So far officers have not located anyone in the area and we would like to speak to anyone who may have information or seen this man in the nearby vicinity.

“Any dashcam footage from anyone passing at the relevant time would be useful.
