National park launches new award

A NEW “Peak District Award” has been launched, in a bid to encourage people to learn more about the national park.

The National Park Authority has set up the qualification, which will be launched at Castleton visitors’ centre on Sunday, July 29.

To gain the certificate, people need to complete an application saying what topic they will study, such as wildlife, plants, geology or local history.

They then need to keep a record of what they do, visiting the Peak District National Park during that time.

Award co-ordinator Sarah Wilks said: “We want people to discover what’s special about the national park.

“There is no age limit, we are looking for individuals, families or groups to sign up and have fun finding out about the Peak District.

“It can include going on a ranger guided walk, taking part in a learning and discovery event in the school holidays, volunteering for conservation, community, cultural or arts projects, or visiting a heritage site.”
