New councillor enters civic record books

COUNCILLOR Ian Campbell was elected less than a month ago – but yesterday completed a whirlwind rise to the top as he was installed as the country's youngest ever mayor.

Coun Campbell, who is just 23, won his seat on Bassetlaw Council by a margin of just 15 votes, but was immediately nominated for one of the authority's biggest honours.

Yesterday, he was sworn in as Mayor of Retford, and described his experience as "amazing" and said he hoped to prove to other young people that they could have a voice.

The former shop worker said he had become interested in politics after becoming president of the sutdent's union at North Notts College in Worksop. After leaving he went to work for Bassetlaw's Labour MP John Mann.

He beat his Conservative rival in East Retford West in the May elections after several recounts, but will put his Labour allegiances aside while carrying out his ceremonial duties.

Coun Campbell, who went to Tuxford Comprehensive School and lives in Retford said: "During the ceremony the robes and chain were passed to me and I couldn't believe it.

"I am really looking forward to representing the town as mayor, and I am also looking forward to representing the people of my ward and working hard for them in the next four years."

Coun Campbell is just eight days younger than the previous record holder.
