New police HQ stays within council area

A COUNCIL leader has welcomed a police force’s decision to move to a new base within the same Yorkshire district.

North Yorkshire Police is set to move from its current headquarters in a former stately home at Newby Wiske to a newly-acquired site at South Kilvington, near Thirsk.

Hambleton District Council’s leader, Coun Mark Robson, said: “We will work closely with the police and others to make sure that we have all the information needed to deal with the application efficiently.

“The council welcomes the plans for community engagement on the design of the building and it will take into account what the community says in making a decision. We will also undertake our own consultation on the planning application.”

The relocation deal, which was confirmed on Thursday, will save the force £455,000 a year in running costs and paves the way for the Newby Wiske site to be sold off and replaced with the smaller facility.
