John Maloney, rugby league player

John Maloney, who has died at 72, was one of rugby league’s star performers in the 1960s and 1970s, and remains Hull FC’s second-highest points scorer.

A committed back and world-class goalkicker who played 226 games in East Yorkshire, he also enjoyed spells at both Shaw Cross and Dewsbury in the West Riding.

He founded something of a rugby league dynasty in the area, with his son, Francis, representing England on two occasions, and his grandson, Dominic, following in his grandfather’s footsteps to Hull.

Hull FC’s official historian, Bill Dalton, described the man he knew in younger years as “kind-hearted and funny”, and noted that he always found time for the younger members of the club.

Off the pitch, he was a dedicated local historian and the co-author of a book about the Dewsbury men killed during the First World War.
